WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument stands as a tribute to George Washington, the nation’s first president and Revolutionary War commander. Located near the center of the National Mall and standing 555 feet tall, the monument was completed in 1884. Constructed of marble, granite and bluestone gneiss, the monument remains the world’s tallest stone structure and obelisk and symbolizes national unity and respect for Washington’s leadership.
