WASHINGTON — The Anacostia Community Museum, one of the Smithsonian museums dedicated to exploring the rich history, culture, and experiences of local communities, was a new opportunity to learn, reflect, and appreciate the stories that shape our shared history.

The museum recently reopened with several new exhibitions; each offering visitors a unique perspective. On the Record explores how communities preserve their histories through photographs, oral histories, newspapers, music, and personal archives, demonstrating that history is often recorded by those who live it. Portals to the Past invites visitors to discover connections between the past and present through objects, places, and personal stories that reveal the enduring impact of history on our daily lives. Game Changers and Scorekeepers celebrates the individuals, organizations, and communities that have transformed sports, highlighting how athletics can inspire social change, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for future generations. District of Creativity showcases the remarkable artistic talent, innovation, and cultural expression found throughout Washington, D.C., celebrating the people and neighborhoods that make the nation's capital such a vibrant creative community. Together We Make History reminds us that history is created every day through the actions of ordinary people. By sharing our stories, preserving our experiences, and supporting our communities, we all contribute to the historical record.

Each exhibition encourages visitors to see history not as something confined to the past, but as something we continue to create together every day.

WASHINGTON — Last night, Thurraya and I had the honor of attending the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.

For the past decade, this extraordinary museum has preserved, shared, and celebrated the stories, struggles, achievements, and enduring contributions of African Americans to our nation's history. Since opening in 2016, it has welcomed millions of visitors from around the world, becoming a place of education, reflection, inspiration, and hope.

The evening brought together guests to commemorate this important milestone with opening remarks, a special anniversary program, and an opportunity to celebrate the museum's remarkable first ten years. Walking through the museum and sharing in this celebration was a powerful reminder that history is not only something we study—it is something we preserve, honor, and pass on to future generations.

WASHINGTON — At the Vanguard: Making and Saving History at HBCUs is an exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture that highlights the vital role Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played in preserving African American history, culture, and creativity. Drawing on collections from five partner institutions—Clark Atlanta University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Texas Southern University, and Tuskegee University—the exhibition presents more than 100 objects that reflect artistic achievement, academic innovation, campus life, and activism. Through archival materials, artworks, and cultural artifacts, At the Vanguard emphasizes how HBCU museums and archives have long served as cultural stewards, safeguarding stories that might otherwise have been lost and shaping how Black history is remembered and shared.
