FAIRFAX, Va. โ Constructed during the Jim Crow era, the Fairfax Rosenwald School, also known as the Fairfax Colored School, provided educational opportunities for African-American children who were denied equal access to public education. The school was one of nearly 5,000 schools built across the South through the Julius Rosenwald Fund, a partnership between philanthropist Julius Rosenwald and educator Booker T. Washington.
The historical marker at the intersection of George Mason Drive and School Street honors both the school's local legacy and the broader Rosenwald School movementโone of the most significant efforts to advance Black education in American history.
