WASHINGTON — The Lincoln Memorial honors the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln. It was dedicated at the west end of the National Mall, in 1922. The neoclassical monument features a seated statue of Lincoln sculpted by Daniel Chester French and is surrounded by 36 Doric columns representing the states in the Union at the time of his death in 1865. The interior includes inscriptions of the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln’s second inaugural address, reflecting his leadership during the Civil War and his dedication to unity and equality. The memorial also served as a prominent site for civil rights events, most notably the 1963 March on Washington, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech from the memorial's steps.
