The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal along the Potomac River between Washington, DC and Cumberland, Maryland was in operation from 1831 until 1924 and was established as a National Park in 1971. From 1928 to 1950, the 184.5-mile canal provided a source of income for families along the Potomac River. The lockhouses along the canal were built by the C&O Canal Company in the 19th century to provide basic housing for lockkeepers and their families, who opened and closed locks for boats moving up and down the canal. #AmericasNationalParks #MyDMV
